His announcing was synonymous to the game for me growing up as a millennial who was able to enjoy his commentary on FOX, Monday Night Football, and through the Madden games. It actually hit me hard to know he passed just after watching his documentary on Christmas. He will always be remembered.
It’s crazy. I’ve never really cared about football but I’ll miss his energy and happiness for the game he loved. That’s why he’s so iconic because his love and personality was truly great.
This was beautifully stated by Colin. He got to the core of who the man was. I believe in the John Madden that Colin describes. There is never enough reflection on the intelligence that is always front and center in being great at anything. It sets the moral code in one’s character. This man’s character is without a doubt immeasurable. R.I.P. John Madden.
Plus I learned of his 6 legged Turkey and his TURKDUCKIT he was a larger than life character. I can't do the man justice but a big hole has been left by his passing
Good take by Cowherd. I remember I fell in love with football in 2004 after my first year in pop Warner. We were winless and our coaches were poor. After that season, I began playing the madden games, and I remembered his broadcasts on certain players, positions, schemes and personnel taught me about the game. Now I'm a teacher and a football coach at the middle school I work at and John Madden had an influence on my football journey as a player and a coach. RIP Madden.
This is by far Colin Cowherds BEST segment. Colin gave the great John Madden the respect and professional admiration that only a TRUE FOOTBALL GENIUS deserves. Thank you Sir.
I remember watching NFL as a kid with my dad every Sunday and hearing John Madden and Pat Summeral doing the broadcast. RIP John Madden. You left your mark as a SB winning coach and a better color commentator
Growing up in Oakland California in the early seventies my 1st experience with football was the oakland raiders John madden Ken Stabler Matsuzaka cliff branch and the list goes on and on his iconic voice his wit And his knowledge of the game! He was second to none! Rest in peace " big Jhon" !!!
I'm 60 and grew up madden proud as skins fan in the early 70's. I shifted to Pittsburgh in 72. We seem to take it for granted, that they'll always be there! Appreciate & enjoy the wisdom John Madden echoed!
85 years of excellence. I haven't been this sad but at the same time happy in my whole life. I am so happy that Madden got his flowers before he passed. RIP Coach.
I’m your age and totally agree…I recall my first football game in 72s era. RIP JOHN…I’m so fortunate to have witnessed a period in the NFL which was truly golden and epic. He brought it alive for most of us. I grew up in SF and recall like you the names of the Raiders players…football was tough and gritty…
Honestly i envy you and I wish I could have watched him as a coach. But at least I had the privilege to watch him in the 90s and early 2000’s as a commentator.
I usually dont click on Colin's videos, but Im glad I watched this one. John Madden was my childhood and teenage years when it came to football. His voice is still in my mind when watching football, especially Sunday night. We lost a real one.
Posted this on Facebook. John Madden …………………. As you may be aware John Madden passed away today. At age 6, my first team was The Oakland Raiders, and my first coach was John Madden. Memories of John Madden & The Seventies Raiders provide a warm glow in my heart that burns even today. ☀️ Thank you coach, for All of The Great Memories! 🥰🏴☠️🏈
My dad and mom grew up watching Cosell, Gifford, and Meredith on MNF. My younger brother and I grew up watching John Madden and Pat Summerall on FOX NFL SUNDAY. Madden NFL '96 on Playstation and Madden NFL '04 on PS2. This really is sad news. The man will always bleed silver and black, and he was football. John Madden is one of the main ingredients of the "Autumn Wind". From a Cowboys fan, he was one of the best. RIP John Madden. 😢😭
John Madden was also one of the last commentators on Monday Night Football before it went from ABC to ESPN. Al Michaels and he were also a solid commentary team, but Dennis Miller, not so much, unfortunately.
My 5th birthday in 2004. My dad brought home my first Madden game ever. I remember he sat and talked about John Maddens coaching and broadcasting for hours while I started playing on my PlayStation. He became football as I know it to this day. A part of my childhood is gone. A part of the sport I love so much is gone. You talk about legacies amongst the players, but nobody defines what a legacy in this sport is better than John Madden
John Madden was the voice of my childhood. He along with Harry and Skip Carey, Vin Scully, Bob Costas, and Howard Cosell. These men told the story of my adolescence. I will forever be grateful to John for his insight and storytelling that made the game I love just that much better. He will be missed.
RIP Mr. Madden. I remember how sad I was when he retired from broadcasting. It wasn’t just his expertise, he was comforting and fun to watch call games. Forever a legend.
I read Madden's autobiography and NOBODY - and I mean NOBODY - understood the game like he did. They developed technology specifically for Madden, and all the other guys wanted the tech but nobody knew how to use it like Madden. And Colin, you had it right: he was never duplicated. He is sorely missed.
My father was 20 yrs older than Madden, I am 20 years younger than Madden. Growing up in DC, Madden loved the hogs and highlighted each of them in big big games. Loved his commentary on the Cowboys and Giants and Eagles. As a coach, he took a California team east in the playoffs in frigid weather and beat the Steelers and the Colts in the playoffs. Something the 49ers and Rams, who won playoff games mostly at home, could never do. Also the Raiders, along with the Chiefs, featured HBCU players who became standouts and all pros and Hall of Famers. The Raiders versus Colts OT playoff game, the Immaculate Reception game, and ALL of the Raiders vs Steelers were incredible games, decided by always a field goal or extra point!
Imagine coaching for 10 years and only losing 32 regular season games, that’s 3 games a season. If the all time great Steelers team wasn’t there at the same time, I’d wager he’d have a 2-3 more rings. I was too young to understand his coaching greatness when I watched growing up, but John Madden helped me learn to love the professional game like no one else could. RIP to a legend
I remember my mom taking me to a Denny's in Sacramento California in 1972 i was 6 year's old and all of a sudden these grown men started yell and started jumping over the counter coming after the television that was the IMMACULATE DECEPTION PLAY. The first SUPER BOWL was the undeafted dolphins vs the over the hill gang the redskins and George Allen. In 1973 my mom took to my first raiders game defeating the new York football giants 42-0 and then it was silver and black forever. GOOD TIMES.
I think another thing about John as I remember back growing up in the exact same era and home town as Colin is that John was also about having fun he said it over and over “you gotta have fun” “you can’t take yourself too serious” etc… he wasn’t just a hall of fame coach he was a hall of fame human
If you took either his coaching, broadcasting, or game development part of his life, he’d be in the Hall of Fame. Madden had basically 3 HoF careers over his life.
And honestly I cannot think of someone else who did that. Led 3 careers that individually stand out as a great in 3 different fields. Its interesting to read just how much input and control he had over the game when it first came into existence.
For as long as I've been involved with the game of football, I can honestly say that had it not been for John Madden, I don't know how I'd look at the game. I remember there was a book he wrote that I read when I was younger, and it broke down every position, the role of every position, the importance of said position, how to draw up plays, it had so many gems in it. Even in his video games, he shared such sweet wisdom of the game and made it so simple to understand. Haven't played Madden in years but I'm definitely gonna consider next year's Madden.
@@paxhumana2015 I never could get into ESPN NFL 2K5. I'd rather go back to the Madden that had the skills challenge on it. I forgot what year that was.

Madden's crowning achievement was the Raiders' Super Bowl XI victory. He had to retire due to ulcers. But he really set Tom Flores up for success and the Raiders' Super Bowl XVI and XVIII victories. Those Tom Flores Raiders teams still had Madden's stamp all over them.
He turned that Raider team into the meanest team EVER. That offensive line almost all of them ended up in the HOF. Teams were petrified of playing them, total hardcore dysfunctional players that became the most functional winningest team for over a decade. They could have won more SB's with him but won 2 shortly afterwards as he had laid the foundation of the Raider mystique - combined with Al Davies mentality of US AGAINST EVERYONE - It was a powerhouse of a team. One of Colin’s best ever tributes and analysis ever. Born in 1970 , I think how the the NFL shaped my concept of manliness, fairness, racial meritocracy. Rip John Madden and that generation who modeled a better America!

Watching the NFL and listening to madden on TV was awesome.madden would tell when the play was run who made the key block as soon as the play is run and it’s only when they replay the play in slow motion that you would see it. John Madden for me is who taught me as a fan every thing about football. Since he retired they have never been another analyst to call football games as good as him.seriously I miss the day of john Madden and pat Summerall in the booth. Those were the days.madden was the smartest football coach i’ve ever seen.
Great take. Loved listening to him call games, loved his comments in the video games. I still remember some of his oft repeated words of wisdom from the video games
On days like today, the Kobe tragedy during SB week in Miami....... You can see a different side of Colin. I'm lucky I get to listen to a very articulate and passionate person for the last 15 years or so.
I wish that the same thing could be said over society and humankind, but Anarchism always leads to unchecked amounts of destruction until it is corralled by some sort of harsh rule in the end.
From 1967 to 1972 the greatest rivalry in Football was between the Raiders and Chiefs those 2 teams had about 12 hall of fame players both coaches are in the Hof this was the most ferocious rival in football history and mark my words with the passing of Coach espn will revise this and this was before espn existed in think it was the greatest talent of 2 teams that hated each other
I still remember as a young Packers fan, I taped the Packers-Patriots Super Bowl over and over and I can just remember his excitement in the booth. When Madden came out and my parents bought it, I fell in love with the sport. He was the best.
I like Colin came along during the early 70’s and those Sunday afternoon AFC West games on NBC with Charlie Jones were huge. Madden was just as big for those of us who grew up during that timeframe as Landry, Shula and Noll. As Colin said those Raiders like Sistrunk, Villapiano, Atkinson and Hendricks were a reflection of Madden. They usually won and I never saw them get blown out in the few games they did lose. Great man and coach!
I am 43 so I don't remember Madden as a coach but I do remember him as a broadcaster and how he just KNEW the game. That's why they wanted him for NFL video games
This half sentence snuck in there stands out to me: „He gave credit to linemen who nobody talked about“. I distinctly remember John Madden often calling out how much he loved Greg Menusky. Greg went to Colgate University like myself, which is probably why I took note. John loved Greg and many times called out his grit and how hard he was playing despite being an undrafted player from a small school. - I loved that.
I remember once seeing and hearing a sound bite from Madden when he was coaching. I forgot who he was talking to during the game but he told one of the players something to the effect of "Just get out there and play, stop thinking about everything, its football not an operating room!! and when you hit someone, hit them so hard you are the only thing that they're thinking about the rest of the game".
Great tribute to John Madden. Colin gave an equally great tribute to Ken Stabler when he passed. Madden and Stabler shaped my fanhood as a kid, born in 1966. Unfortunately they were my first two tastes of reality in sports. Madden retired after 1978, Stabler was traded away after 1979. John Madden, Ken Stabler, Al Davis, and the rest of the Oakland Raiders did as much to promote the NFL as anyone other team or individual through the 1970's.
@@thatoneguy9473 , people can rip the commentary from live games, plus, as long as you have audio, a computer program can literally either alter the voice of a person so that they could literally sound like John Madden in the game or it could generate its own voice to sound like John Madden.
John Madden is essentially a head coach that is the eternal student of the game. While he never played the game himself, he knew more about the game than most other players that played the game and I only know of a few people that could be considered as his equals at the game...Chris Petersen, of the Boise State University and the Washington State University fame, Bill Belicheck of the Green Bay Packers and the New England Patriots fame, Mike Vrabel of the Tennessee Titans fame, Tony Dungy of the Indianapolis Colts fame, Frank Deig and John Gagliardi of the University of Saint Thomas (Minnesota) fame, and Larry Kehres and Vance Kehres of the University of Mount Union (Ohio) fame.
Rest In Peace John … I can’t believe there are people out there trying to say John was a bad person and a racist. He is beloved by many and many will say that he was never anything but the guy he presented himself to be … please don’t fall into the lies and speculation
And never forget the crazy and spectacular without people seeing it coming QB.... Ken the snake 🐍 Stabler... talk about a Madden QB!!!! I'm a Charger fan... but today I'm a Raider... rest in peace Maddon... your THE LEGEND.
I would to young to remember it, because I was born in 76'. But, I would've loved to seen those 70's Madden Raiders, against those 70's Landry Cowboys' in a Super Bowl. 🙂
John Madden enriched our lives. Those old enough to experience his coaching days also remember those Raiders like the young Colin. Legends. But if your first memories of the game we're ten years earlier, 1962 instead of 1972, Madden's importance is slightly different. Colin doesn't remember Lombardi and the Packers. Another perfect team. He doesn't remember seeing Staubach or OJ in college. What made football fun was Joe Namath and John Madden. Because the Raiders were on the West Coast, the East Coast often got to see them play, even in the old AFL days. I actually saw the Heidi game, when Disney was more important than the NFL. Completely different style than the traditional NFL. They were shootouts. When Namath brought parity to the league all kinds of exciting things happened. Madden was one of them. But so was Howard Cosell and Dandy Don Meredith. I remember Namath playing the Raiders on Monday Night. The Jets were a mess. Joe could barely move. He threw practically every time. They lost, but Joe put on a show. As a Steelers fan, another perfect team, I can't say I ever cheered for the Raiders. But I always liked John Madden. RIP.
I think that you missed out on some good shootouts in the NFL since that time. I remember one that was between the Bills and the Dolphins in the 1980s that was a pretty good one, but the one that is even eclipsing those old shootout games that you had mentioned was a slugfest that happened between the Bengals and Browns around 2004 or 2005. I think that the final score on that game was something like 51 to 45 with the Bengals winning, though, unfortunately, neither of those teams were good that year.
@@paxhumana2015 Thanks. I was pretty young. My earliest memory is of the Packers on a grainy B&W TV. Pretty sure I saw Jim Brown around then. YA Tittle playing the Bears in the 63 championship game is the first I remember by name. What's strange is I attended a game the Sunday after JFK was assassinated. No idea if it was before or after Tittle game. I don't remember any scores from the AFL games. I just remember they scored like crazy. It was very different than the NFL games I watched. I've never seen an analysis of why. Later I assumed one of the reasons was that they changed the rules to make it more exciting. Sort of like the ABA. When Namath upset the Colts, it looked like a typical NFL game. Namath was careful, the Jets played defense and ran. Low scoring. But many of us thought it was the dawning of a new NFL.

Since he retired they have never been another analyst to call football games as good as him.seriously I miss the day of john Madden and pat Summerall in the booth. Those were the days.madden was the smartest football coach i’ve ever seen.
Rip, Next madden game should 100% have him on the cover
And the kind of game would make him proud!
That was excellent. RIP. Love listening to Colin talk
Thx Colin perfect way to describe John Madden great show R.I.P John Madden.
Awesome Colin. That’s why we watch you everyday we can. You tell the real story of life.
Well said
Nice, substantive tribute by Colin that made you think of this great man from a slightly different angle. Kudos, and R.I.P., Coach Madden.
Great take. Loved listening to him call games, loved his comments in the video games. I still remember some of his oft repeated words of wisdom from the video games
John was incredible I cannot imagine a football season without John Madden
Rest In Peace coach Raider Nation 4 Life
On days like today, the Kobe tragedy during SB week in Miami.......
You can see a different side of Colin.
I'm lucky I get to listen to a very articulate and passionate person for the last 15 years or so.
Maybe this will give EA the motivation needed to finally gives us great Madden Games again
Wonderful tribute. Goes to the impact this man had.
I like football and listening to John Madden announcer he was great and a few more RIP may angles take you into your rest🙏🙏🙏
Lost a REAL legend..game changer RIP Coach
Beautiful. Thank you Colin.
The fewer rules a coach has, the fewer rules there are for players to break - John Madden
I wish that the same thing could be said over society and humankind, but Anarchism always leads to unchecked amounts of destruction until it is corralled by some sort of harsh rule in the end.
@@paxhumana2015 …. Okay….
A Master of his Craft, can always explain his craft simply.
From 1967 to 1972 the greatest rivalry in Football was between the Raiders and Chiefs those 2 teams had about 12 hall of fame players both coaches are in the Hof this was the most ferocious rival in football history and mark my words with the passing of Coach espn will revise this and this was before espn existed in think it was the greatest talent of 2 teams that hated each other
The current Chiefs teams are no joke either, and the team is in good hands with Machines and Reid.
I still remember as a young Packers fan, I taped the Packers-Patriots Super Bowl over and over and I can just remember his excitement in the booth. When Madden came out and my parents bought it, I fell in love with the sport. He was the best.
"Intensity, Integrity, intelligence" so basically Kurt Angle got it.
I immediately thought of Kurt Angle when Colin said that
Yeah, I thought to myself, was Colin a secret WWE fan back in the day, quoting the WWE's "only Olympic gold medalist" like that.
Bro i died laughing when he said that the three i’s baby one won a gold medal and the other two super bowls true champs and legend’s
78 was Last yea .r
This half sentence snuck in there stands out to me: „He gave credit to linemen who nobody talked about“. I distinctly remember John Madden often calling out how much he loved Greg Menusky. Greg went to Colgate University like myself, which is probably why I took note. John loved Greg and many times called out his grit and how hard he was playing despite being an undrafted player from a small school. - I loved that.
7:40 - Kurt Angle's motto lol
John Maddens toughness came from growing up in Daly City, Ca.
Awesome
Great tribute to John Madden. Colin gave an equally great tribute to Ken Stabler when he passed. Madden and Stabler shaped my fanhood as a kid, born in 1966. Unfortunately they were my first two tastes of reality in sports. Madden retired after 1978, Stabler was traded away after 1979. John Madden, Ken Stabler, Al Davis, and the rest of the Oakland Raiders did as much to promote the NFL as anyone other team or individual through the 1970's.
Very very well said
They need to put John Madden as a commentator option in the madden games from now on
I mean that would be pretty difficult considering almost every line spoken is recorded for each game. Some lines a recycled but not a ton.
@@thatoneguy9473 , people can rip the commentary from live games, plus, as long as you have audio, a computer program can literally either alter the voice of a person so that they could literally sound like John Madden in the game or it could generate its own voice to sound like John Madden.
Perfect segment
Feel lucky that I got to listen to Madden call games for about 14 years before he retired.
RIP to the goat of broadcasters
I learned football from John Madden. Thanks for the gift John, and I never even personally met you.
Great job describing John Madden
Great words about Mr. Madden 👏👏
Here, here!
JM is up there with Vince Lombardi when it comes to the full NFL product they, the NFL should name a trophy after his name as well.
John could take any franchise ALL THE WAY. Yes. He was better than all the rest. TO THIS DAY.
What about the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Oilers/Tennessee Titans?
Outstanding!
Intensity integrity intelligence the three i’s who knew kurt angle and john madden were so similar lol
This was Colin's best Show ever.
Rest In Peace John … I can’t believe there are people out there trying to say John was a bad person and a racist. He is beloved by many and many will say that he was never anything but the guy he presented himself to be … please don’t fall into the lies and speculation
It still works today. Just listen.
And never forget the crazy and spectacular without people seeing it coming QB.... Ken the snake 🐍 Stabler... talk about a Madden QB!!!! I'm a Charger fan... but today I'm a Raider... rest in peace Maddon... your THE LEGEND.
confirms my theory that some of Colin's best segments are his eulogies. RIP JM
My favorite pregame Madden quote "Gentlemen, don't worry about the horse being blind, just load the wagon".
He explained the game simply
Colin ripped off Kurt Angles 3 I's🤣
Oh it's true, it's DAMN true!
